A World Made by Travel (Stanford University Press, 2024)
In the eighteenth century, tens of thousands of travelers journeyed to Italy on the Grand Tour. These travels in the age of Enlightenment contributed to a massive reimagining of politics and the arts, of the market for culture, and of ideas about education and leisure. Giovanna Ceserani’s A World Made by Travel combines—in dynamic format—original research with data and visualizations about the lives and journeys of 6,007 travelers. It reveals the diverse experiences, elite and otherwise, that collectively constituted the eighteenth-century Grand Tour.
I worked on this project from its proposal review at Stanford university Press, through its peer review, transmittal, contract, production, registration, and archiving. I coordinated its copyediting and the cover design with freelancers and external partners. As part of my typical production work on the project, I performed an in-depth technical review and worked closely with the author and her development team on a months-long deep technical edit in GitHub using a combination of Markdown, HTML, and other languages. At SUP, I still manage its hosted environment on Reclaim Cloud, ensuring adequate resources are allotted to it, and monitoring analytics for usage and performance.
